Genesis Mission – Making Disciples

Genesis Mission exists to make and equip disciples of Jesus Christ to engage with the mission of the Church. By doing this they hope to help to grow in faith and share it with others in their lives.

Seven years ago they began to develop a method of helping people to encounter Christ and become missionary disciples. At first this was done by forming Genesis Teams of active disciples in parishes. After an initial weekly course, the parish evangelisation team would meet monthly. During these meetings, members share about their efforts to evangelise. Genesis Mission also provide a variety of opportunities to reach out to people with simple activities. They make a point of going out to where people are and looking for opportunities to start life giving conversations.

Equipping disciples

The Genesis Mission Team noticed a ‘living discipleship’ emerging as parishioners learned from listening to one another’s experiences. People were learning from the successes and failures of others and began to grow in confidence in sharing their faith.

Many people who have had an encounter with Christ wanted to know how to help others to do the same. So the Genesis Mission Team developed the Genesis method, a simple way to tune into the Holy Spirit, listen well to those they meet, and sensitively share the Good News into their situation. The genius of this method is how it helps intentional disciples tune into the Holy Spirit and step out in faith to help others to encounter Christ. Click below to read the testimonies of some people who learned this method and put it to use wherever possible.

Genesis Mission House

The Genesis Mission House is a residential school of discipleship in Plymouth city centre. It was established to receive pilgrims who wanted in depth formation for Mission. Through a rigorous programme of spiritual and practical formation, pilgrims experience the power of the Gospel in their lives.

Whether attending the four day initial course or returning to go deeper, pilgrims go to the Mission House to explore their personal path to holiness and journey deeper in their discipleship with Jesus Christ. This enables them to learn how to respond to opportunities or reach out to others have potentially life changing conversations with others.

Mission Made Possible

At the start of lockdown Genesis Project launched Mission Made Possible. This is an online formation course in discipleship and evangelisation. The response has been overwhelming and the Genesis Team have learned so much during these strange time. Things have opened up in the most amazing way!

The biggest advantage has been to work with individuals who have had encounters with Christ, but not known what to do next. The people joining this course do so because they genuinely want to learn how to play their part in building God’s kingdom, and that’s a real joy.

Genesis Mission is witnessing conversion of hearts and a new strong healthy desire to evangelise as part of the everyday life. This is the cultural change that we have been praying and working for.

Hunger for formation

Over 100 people have participated in this formation locally. Genesis Mission has also partnered with the diocese of Syracuse in the USA, who have adopted the formation for all of their key workers.

Since the introduction of the Genesis Mission here in our diocese, we have experienced an awakening to the movement of the Holy Spirit, even in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Genesis Mission are delighted to also be working with several dioceses around England and Wales who are interested in Mission Made Possible and Genesis Mission.

Leadership training

The demand is so great that Genesis Mission has had to grow and train trainers. By investing in leaders who can deliver the formation, more Catholics can become active and confident Missionary Disciples.
